Luxor was the ancient capital of Southern Egypt and the religious capital of united Egypt. The city of the great temple of the God Amun (Baal), later to become the god Amun-Ra (Marduk), known as Karnak, or Thebes to the Greeks and Romans. Remodelled and expanded over 1500 years the architraves on top of the columns alone are estimated to weigh 70 tons.

In 356 AD Constantius II ordered the closing of pagan temples throughout the Roman empire, Christian churches were founded among the ruins.
